Review of Loving Vincent (2017) by Tor M — 15 Mar 2018
This film caught my interest the minute I heard of it. I'm not a big art head, but I do dig some of the big European, influential artists and van Gogh is one of my favorites.
A known story is presented nicely with words and people, everything takes place some time after his death as Armand Roulin, the son of a friend of Vincent, is trying to find out what happend in Vincents last days. For me, everything here is about the presentation. The work, the art and the quality of the images. 65,000 frames, all done as oil paintings on canvas by over 100 artists. Every single one in the style and technique used by the man himself. Boy, can you top that?
850 of them is very different, later on copyed and edited to make movements and such. Well, at least that's the way I figure it.
Striking visuals, impressive voiceovers by the actors and with Clint Mansell on the music buttons it's hard to be left unpleased. I must say I was hoping for more, but I was fearing it would be way worse. It's a beautiful piece, with a sad story that should be well known to all art students around the world. Watch van Gogh come alive in this spellbinding, cinematic trip. This is art in it's clearest form, and also a really good film.
8.5 out of 10 brush strokes.
