Review of Loving Vincent (2017) by Adam M — 06 Sep 2018
What a gorgeous film, especially the black and white segments. I had the good fortune to watch this movie with an artist who was pulling up all the paintings the film was paying homage to, which did wonders to increase my appreciation for how well the animators were able to replicate Van Gogh's work.
The script has some problems, it's mostly just a series of people telling stories about Vincent as the protagonist goes around figuring out why he died. It's a really interesting approach, but it does cause the movie to have a plot that doesn't feel very active or urgent.
As a result it does drag a bit at points. But Loving Vincent delivers where it counts: with unique and magnificent animation.
