Review of Loving (2016) by Saltypolfro — 28 Nov 2016
This is a good movie that could have been great if it corrected one glaring flaw that I'm amazed was never addressed: The script does not have a first act. Richard and Mildred are already romantically involved and expecting a child when the film begins, but being an integrated couple in Virginia at that time, I desperately wanted to know how they met and see the actual beginning of their relationship.
Did they ever discuss what danger they were getting into? Keeping that from the audience made it very hard for me to engage with them emotionally when the dramatic stuff began to happen. It's a shame, because the acting and direction and camerawork are exceptional.
When the story started dragging in the second half I felt it was precisely because the natural beginning of the narrative was missing.
