Review of Loving (2016) by Patrick L — 07 Jun 2017
Loving is directed and written by Jeff Nichols, and it stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga in a historical drama about an interracial couple that got married, but it's illegal to do so, which got them arrested, and some lawyers heard about it, which they want to help them find a way for interracial marriage to be legal.
I'm always looking forward to seeing Jeff Nichols films as there hasn't been a film from that I thought was bad, at least so far as there's been news that he's doing the remake of Alien Nation which I'm a bit worried about that goes as I enjoyed that film, but I'll remain optimistic of him doing that.
So for this, it's an improvement from Midnight Special, despite that I also really enjoy that movie very much. Joel Egerton acted very stoic in this, and it was done very well that was a risky move that he done.
Ruth Negga is also amazing that it's really nice to see them portray the characters like actual people, and even talk like them too as the writing by Jeff Nichols felt very real and lively which it didn't feel like your typical kind of film.
You learn a lot about the people and what they're going through, and you care about them which you want them to succeed in where they're at, even if they didn't want to make this a big deal as they just wanted to love each other, and nothing else.
It really feels like a tragic story, and you can see it from the chemistry that the characters have, which is the main focus here, and it's done beautifully. Even if it has a bit of a slow pace, I was still interested in what's going on, and I'm very glad we got something like this that we never actually heard of.
Loving is a terrific film that Jeff Nichols is still going strong in what he obviously loves to do.
