Review of Loving (2016) by Compi24 — 05 Apr 2020
A quiet, sincere and satisfying portrayal of true-to-life events, staged the exact way every historical retelling should be staged; free from any slant, bias or ulteriority. "Loving" finds writer/director Jeff Nichols depicting the story of Richard and Mildred Loving exactly the way it occurred, and with a subtle, sure hand.
This isn't one of those prestige pics where you'll see lead actors tearing up the scenery, screaming at the top of their lungs or sobbing into a handkerchief. "Loving" is dignified, quiet and at times challenging in terms of pace, but never devoid of an overall sense of meaning or weight.
As with other Jeff Nichols films, this one really picks up in the final act, which contains some truly endearing words on humanity, justice and the importance of simply treating others as human beings.
It's not a slam-bang watch, but it is most definitely a worthwhile one overall.
