Review of Loving (2016) by Tom L — 11 Dec 2016
I seem to be seeing a pattern here: watching films about historical events is a 50-50 proposition: for every "42," there is--well, a "Loving," which unfortunately is in the lower half of that equation. This is simply a poorly-written narrative of a groundbreaking event. It has numerous gaps (What were the SCOTUS arguments--from both sides?) as well as spots that drag with no real contribution to learning about this couple as people (Did we really need the bar scene toward the end? Answer: No). On top of that, the contrived connection to current events is both bothersome and ham-handed.
I was stoked to see this film; I am sorely disappointed with its results. I'm glad I got my historical film fix when re-watching "Tora! Tora! Tora!," one from this genre that does it right.
