Review of Lover (1992) by Maggie J — 05 Jun 2009
How could I possibly have missed this one before, until now? This is precisely my type of feature: sensual, beautifully filmed, and superbly acted by a well-cast ensemble. Every part of it works, really -from the location, which only adds to the headiness of the story, to Jane March, who is at once emotionally disconnected and passionately involved as only a teenager can be.
A secondary but surprisingly enjoyable aspect of the production was the supporting music, which was well-employed and in some instances quite memorable. In short, Annaud has weaved a tale at once erotic and artistically gifted as only a few directors can, and we are all the better for it.
