Review of Lovelace (2013) by Joel M — 21 Sep 2013

The film "Lovelace" is based on the life of Linda Lovelace, the infamous porn star that made headwaves (pun intended) for her linguistic performance in the 70's porn movie "Deep Throat". Amanda Seyfried stars as Lovelace and actually bares her acting soul and then some, which turned out to be a commendable performance for Ms. Seyfried. Directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman direct "Lovelace" with an emphasis on Linda's troubled relationship with her husband Chuck, who broke her into the adult film industry for more than chuckles. Chuck used Linda and committed domestic violent acts on Linda throughout their rocky marriage. The problem is that Epstein and Friedman prioritized that storyline of the film way too much which caused it to lose the staying power of Lovelace's impact on the adult film industry. Andy Bellin's screenplay was also very limp on character development and creative dialogue. Peter Sarsgaard, who is one of the most underrated actors working today, did get a case of acting dysfunction with his over-the- top work here as Chuck. However, one performance that was not stone cold was that of Sharon Stone's portrayal of Lovelace's mother Dorothy Boreman; I was not a bored man in the few scenes she appeared in the picture. The rest of the supporting cast did not suck it in "Deep Throat" I mean "Lovelace" but it was nothing to get too excited about; which included the work of Juno Temple as Lovelace's best friend Patsy, Robert Patrick as Lovelace's stoic father John Boreman, and Chris Noth as the sleazy Porn Industry Mogul Anthony Romano. "Lovelace" did have its rising moments due to Seyfried's work but I would not recommend for you to take a taste of "Lovelace".
