Review of Love, Simon (2018) by Christopher M — 21 Apr 2018
Love, Simon - 3 out of 5 - Love, Simon is directed by Greg Berlanti and based on the novel Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. The film stars Nick Robinson, Josh Duhamel, and Jennifer Garner.
It centers around Simon Spier, a closeted gay teenage boy in high school who is forced to balance his friends, his family, and the blackmailer threatening to out him to the entire school, while simultaneously attempting to discover the identity of the anonymous classmate whom he has fallen in love with online. This movie was so-so for me. It is being compared to John Hughes movies but, it felt like to me a film trying to hard to be that style of film. It could just be that I never really connected to any of the characters or that I couldn't relate to the film like I have in similar styles of movies. To be fair to you the reader I am going to include some other reviews of the film that were more positive.
Brian Truitt of USA Today gave the film 3.5/4 stars and wrote, "Young and old, jocks and nerds, geeks and freaks, and everyone in between should be able to find something to adore in Love, Simon.".
Bruce Demara of the Toronto Star gave the film 3/4 stars, stating "The casting is high quality, the script - with a tantalizing mystery at its heart - is particularly well-crafted and the story hits all the right emotional notes in delivering a funny, warm-hearted and life-affirming tale.".
Molly Freeman of Screen Rant gave the film 4/5 stars or an Excellent rating, stating that "Love, Simon is a funny, heartfelt, and truly touching teen romantic comedy that instantly becomes a modern classic for today's generation.".
Josh Winning of GamesRadar+ gave the film 4/5 stars, describing it as a "warm, sensitive and engaging coming-out-of-ager" and "one of the freshest teen-coms in ages".
In my opinion this film is not worth seeing in theater as I don't feel its worth the money. You are better off waiting to rent it or catching it on Netflix.
