Review of Love Liza (2002) by Cory B — 09 Jan 2009
Should I say it? Yes... I think this is Hoffman's best performance. I was captivated. And he even found a place fit in the 'fuck you' rant where he forms the 'L' down at his waist with his hand.
.. check it out, he does, like, every movie. Anyway, this film is deliciously random (what's even more random is that it's directed by Dick from 'High Fidelity), and the places it goes truly make you feel grateful for what YOU have; or makes you pine for what you want or can't have.
I loved Kathy Bates as well (not playing her usual 'hick-type' character), and most of the supporting cast was memorable, especially Wilson's friend Denny. It clips along, drags a little, and leaves you hanging (if you want to think it that way), but it's a great trip through the psyche of a fragile man who's just lost his wife.
You really have to dig to find this one, and I'm glad I did.
