Review of Love in the Time of Cholera (2007) by Proma R — 12 Sep 2008
I liked this movie somewhat all the while it was a bit disappointing to me, too as I maybe had big expectations for this one. Me liking the movie is mostly due to the beautiful cinematography of the film, the visual side of it all and javier bardem being in it. The movie also offered some nice scenes and dialogue.
However, the acting left me a bit cold except for Javier Bardem. For me there were some weird casting choices made, i.e. john leguizamo and benjamin bratt. The story also concentrated to a large part on the time when already the main characters were relatively old and pining over each other already for decades. I would have liked to see more about their lives from earlier periods.
One really annoying factor was the poor quality of the make up done tto the lead actors to make them look like 70 year olds. They didn't look the part, especially the woman didn't. She seemed to get older and wrinkly a lot slower than Bardem did. The last straw for me was hearing Shakira playing on the soundtrack or at least someone sounding very much like her.
