Review of Love & Pop (1998) by Rick B — 07 Oct 2008
The description for Love & Pop doesn't do the film justice. It's much more than a simple look at the "assisted dating" trend. You follow Hiromi through hanging with her friends to dealing with her emotional issues.
This journey would seem fairly boring, but Hideaki Anno's directing style makes it more interesting than your typical story of a naive teenager. Much of the camerawork is very experimental and the aspect ratio changes thru-out.
The ratio used thru most of the film bothered me at first but I grew accustomed to it fairly quickly.
