Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Geoff T — 21 Jul 2011
The problem with Love and Other Drugs is that it has too much good going for it, and doesn't know how to juggle them all. It seems more like the premise for a genre-leaping television series rather than a film.
Is it a satire on the pharmaceutical industry? Your average love story? An exploration of commitment? A drama on how to be happy with a lover whose disease gets in the way? Typical bildungsroman? None of these interesting ideas are given enough weight in this film, and with more focus, there could have been something great here.
All that being said, it is a very easy movie to watch and it's funny a good amount of the time. The performances from the lead are good, but the problems get in the way more often than not.
