Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Bob S — 11 Feb 2012
A drama about a young man finally ready to settle down with a woman afraid of committing to anything long-term. Gyllenhaal and Hathaway star in this film that starts out as funny, charming and sexy, but changes to quite a tear-jerker and downer half way through.
In this instance, Jamie (played by Gyllenhaal) had to make quite the leap from disrespectful ladies man to compassionate and faithful and I never fully bought his transformation. I also struggled with Hathawayâ(TM)s character, Maggie, because I found her confidence astonishing on her âgood daysâ? living with the early stages of Parkinson's.
Despite the choppy balance between comedy and drama, Zwick directs yet another solid effort that will certainly draw an emotional response from its audience. There is an interesting theme in this movie about how people will change for better or for worse, in sickness and in health.
