Review of Love & Other Drugs (2010) by Antony G — 26 Feb 2013
The first 60/70 minutes of this movie are simply forgettable & was colliding towards a rating of, at most, one star. But suddenly a story appeared & the film soon had soul, evolves & takes you by surprise, albeit with predictable results.
Jake Gyllenhaal plays a young salesman, Jamie, who excels with the gift of the gab & of course his good looks! After losing his job he tries his hand as a sales agent in the pharmaceutical field. This is where he meets Maggie, a free spirit in the first stage of Parkinson's Disease, played excellently by Anne Hathaway.
She refuses to get involved with anyone but she meets her match with Jamie & soon their 'Friends With Benefits' rule has evaporated & they are in a full blown relationship. This is the first hour or so of the movie & is basically a mess with unnecessary nude scenes, bold but far too much with it starting to make you believe this was a soft blue movie.
Thankfully the nudity & multiple sex scenes dissipate & we get a touching story as both Jamie & Maggie soon have to deal with her Parkinson's & the implications this will have on their life.
