Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Craig T — 04 Feb 2016
Not all films lend themselves easily to criticism. This is one of those films. There was so much of it that did not resonate for me (the structure, John Cusack, the TV-movie surface level approach to Wilson's illness, Paul Giamatti, the many moments where the need to be arty trumped the art) juxtaposed with a not insignificant number of things that did (the cinematography, Paul Dano, the music, the structure and breathable length of certain piquant scenes), that I felt left abandoned with emotions I'd not been given the tools to process.
This is not a successful film, but it's not an unsuccessful one either.
