Review of Love & Mercy (2015) by Adam K — 06 Jul 2015
Biopics can be tricky. Often they try to cover too much ground and feel thin in the process. Thankfully this fine film does the job nicely. Even though it covers a fair bit of ground it nails it in most scenes.
It's a startling look into the musical genius and troubled life of Brian Wilson, a man who wrote some of the most popular songs of all times. It interchanges, with great skill, two stages of Wilson's life.
The Pet Sounds era of the 60s and the broken man of the 80s. We see the music take shape and we see the genesis of his troubled life. It's well written and very engaging and the performances are truly first class.
Dano and Cusack play the two Brians and both are great but Paul Giamatti almost steals the the show as the svengali Dr Landy.
