Review of Love & Friendship (2016) by Alfin N — 24 Jun 2016
I was very underwhelmed and disappointed by this film. I was not a fan of the style, and it distracted from the film and was confusing. Perhaps it would be better in a stage adaptation, but for the film, it simply didn't work.
The acting for the most part was stilted, lacking, and strange. The lead was supposed to be amusingly detached, I get that, but her face did not move with any micro- expressions; it was like looking at a mask the entire time.
I love Jane Austen films and appreciate a stylistic look and cheeky humor, but this was vapid and left me feeling like....wait, where was the movie?? It was 100% quippy dialogue, no plot or emotion, no chemistry btw the characters- all this made most of the jokes fall flat as you were not invested at all.
Best part were the costumes and settings which were absolutely gorgeous.
