Review of Love Aaj Kal (2009) by Alan H — 16 Nov 2018
Love Aaj Kal is based around a modern love story that encompasses the values of current day relationships. The idea of current day relationships refers to the idea that relationships with another person are based on objectivity and the overall benefit each individual gains. This relationship is portrayed by Jai played by Saif Ali Khan and Meera played by Deepika Padukone. Adding to the dynamic of the love story, this relationship is juxtaposed with that of Veer Singh by Rishi Kapoor and Harleen by Giselli Monterio. Veer Singh is from a time when those in love would disregard all logic and simply follow their hearts whether it be for better or worse.
The film starts by presenting the modern couple of Jai and Meera. Even as a happy couple, they decide to part ways for what they believe will be the best for both of them. They feel that whatever feelings they have for each other can be pushed aside in order for them pursue their respective careers. We then see both stories of the couples from both generations unfold, showing how even though they lived in different times with different beliefs, true love between people is still the same.
