Review of Lost River (2015) by Chris M — 28 Apr 2015
I have been intrigued about this film ever since it was first announced. Ryan Gosling is a very talented actor who has gone from strength to strength. Going from actor to director is a big step and I was curious whether he had talent behind the camera as well as in front of it.
Does he? Well yes and no. Lost River has many fantastic ideas and the fairy tale concept is one which I found very interesting. However, the story does seem sloppy in places and it's as if Gosling was not sure which direction he wanted the story to go down.
The 3rd act of the film definitely shows this where the plot becomes a complete mess and the structure completely vanishes. However, I enjoyed the majority of the movie and think it's an interesting directorial debut from Gosling.
It's shot beautifully, the soundtrack is fantastic and it's well acted. The story needed improving and Gosling still needs to discover what kind of director he wants to be.
