Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Thomas P — 10 Apr 2012
Its a mood piece. Subtle, nuanced - brilliant for what it has, it's only compelling if you "get it". I didn't quite get it my first viewing - I understood it, but didn't "feel it" l like I did this my 2nd time.. If you appreciate Bill Murray's sly humor, you have the potential to love this.
It touches on loneliness, alienation, being a foreigner, even the exhilaration of 'you two are the only ppl in a foreign land' and the fact all good things must come to an end.
But what a treat to get stuck w the affable quirk of Murray or the ingenue that is Johansson.
I really liked watching Murray in the beginning react to getting yelled at in Japanese - hilarious..
The all-american in me wanted a bigger emotion to shake things up and get them talking more or crying, something to overtly react to, but it's not that kind of movie.
And I'm ok with that.
Pleasantly ok.
I even decided what I wanted to hear in the whisper at the end - see what you come up with for it & msg me ;).
