Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Bosco F — 11 Apr 2012
Bill Murray portrays a washed-up actor who is visiting Japan in order to shoot a whiskey commercial. He has to endure a myriad slew of mild culture shocks, but his disaffected life gets a sudden jolt when an unlikely friendship is formed between him and a confused philosophy student (Scarlett Johansson).
Their shared dissatisfaction with the course of their lives leads to a strong and poignant bond that changes the two of them irrevocably. Written and directed with subtle grace by Sophia Coppola, Lost in Translation is an effectively moving comedy that possesses depth, humor, and wistful heart.
It achieves these goals thanks to the strong chemistry between Murray and Johansson.
