Review of Lost in Translation (2003) by Ryan L — 07 Jul 2012
I will tell you the reason I watched this movie. Bill Murray. There are few actors in the world that will get me to watch a movie just because they are in it. This list includes: Bill Murray, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Jesse Eisenberg (Yea I know, but he I love the guy).
Essentially I will see any movie if one of those four are in them. Such is the case with Lost in Translation. Now in the end the movie happened to be great. The story of two very lost people (Played by Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson) who meet in Tokyo.
Bob (Bill) is a down and out actor who meets the lost soul of a wife who questions just what she is doing in life, and what she should be doing. The movie is carried by the incredibly strong performance of Bill Murray.
He is captivating as Bob Harris and it is no question why he received an Academy Award Nomination. Scarlett Johanson also delivers a very strong performance in the leading lady role. However the trick to the movie is the script.
It's a very tight script. The story is told straight and doesn't make light of the situations of the two main characters. As an audience we can truly feel the loneliness that these characters are feeling.
Sofia Coppola is not necessarily my favorite person in Hollywood, but she does deliver a very strongly written movie that is well directed and brilliantly acted. I think its a very funny, dramatic, and smart movie about how two people from very two different worlds can both feel the same sense of loneliness.
A very well made film that I highly recommend to everyone.
