Review of Lost City Raiders (2008) by Pratick R — 13 Feb 2010
Entertaining made for TV movie that tries to be a serious science based film but is more fun due to how ridiculous it all is. The plot is a cross between Indiana Jones and Waterworld, forty years into the future and Global warming has made the seas rise so much that only 10% of the land mass remains above sea level. A diving team containing a father and two sons are hired by the Vatican to find an ancient sceptre which will supposedly lower the sea levels. Que a race another team who want to find the sceptre and use it to make themselves money. Through an awful love story and you have your plot.
It really is ridiculous from start to finish with some terrible acting, rubbish dialogue, truly laughable science and cardboard cut out bad guys but if watch it knowing to expect these things then there is much fun to be had. The film zips along at a fast pace and there is plenty of terrible action scenes which you can't help but laugh at. The CGI effects are very good for a film of this type, ancient roan buildings are rendered excellenly although there is the occasional terrible scene. Despite the ludicrous plot it's that bad that it manages to be great fun, the final scenes are so stupid it will have you smiling throughout.
Lost City Raiders is definitely one of those so silly it's good films and great silly entertainment.
