Review of Los Angeles Plays Itself (2004) by Sophan P — 08 Dec 2014
Few documentaries can claim to be THE definitive take on anything. But, this THE definitive documentary about L.A. as both a city and a fiction in film. The narrator threads together movies, filmic and social movements, local history, urban planning and an Angeleno's inside knowledge to give you an exhaustively-detailed look at his city.
He may deliver his knowledge bombs in a droll, even curmudeonly PhD-inflected voice, but you don't doubt for a second that this man knows every inch of L.A. as exists in either celluloid or actual concrete. This isn't just the greatest documentary about L.A., it might just be the greatest documentary about movies too.
