Review of Los Angeles Plays Itself (2004) by Trailesque — 15 Jul 2020
This is one of the great cinematic essays. Filmmaker Thom Andersen takes a big stack of clips from a wide range of films set in LA and uses them to illuminate the city's architecture, neighborhoods, and history.
Some of the scenes are key moments, and others appear to be chosen randomly, but all of them reveal something interesting about Los Angeles. You may disagree with some of it--I did--but any serious fan of cinema or this city will appreciate what Andersen has put together here.
