Review of Lore (2012) by Alan W — 14 Mar 2013
It is a fine balance between drama and contrivances and this is an example where one appears to be sacrificed at the expense of the other. What we have is an impressively and beautifully shot film where every image feels meaningful and pregant with significance and analogy.
The narrative - an apologetic (and sympathetic) portrait of post-WWII Germany coming to terms with history and on its way to redemption masquareding as a road trip as seen through the eyes of a bunch of children roaming through the war-ridden landscape - often underplays, almost scared of being too thrilling or dramatic.
A refreshing approach with some great performances but ultimately it is hampered by being a tad slow and heavy going and lacking the dramatic oomphf that would elevate it above an average arthouse curiosity.
