Review of Lore (2012) by Bishop Gerald S — 03 Aug 2013
This was a very powerfully unique movie. It tells the story of a teen and her siblings; whose parents were staunch German Nazis, who left the children to fend for themselves, in an attempt to escape retribution by the victorious Allied forces.
The movie dealt with the struggles that the children encountered while attempting the long and often dangerous journey to the home of their grandmother, in Hamburg. Along the way they not only encounter support and hostility, but also a young Jewish man (a little older than Lore, the main character), who himself has just been liberated from a concentration camp.
Lore has to struggle with her preconceived hatred of the Jews (taught by her parents), and the reality that she and the very lives of her siblings, depended primarily on this particular Jew. That, along, with images of those who suffered in the concentration camps and the role that her father, an German officer, played in all of it, would forever change the way Lore saw herself, her family and the world as a whole.
This film showed the end of the war from a German perspective, like I have never seen before. Five stars for sure!!
