Review of Lord of the Flies (1991) by Kat W — 28 Apr 2010
It's a long time since I've seen this movie,so bear with me.The story is basically this:A group of military school boys is on a trip, when the plane they're on goes down, and crashes near a tropical island. The pilot, the only adult that survived the crash quickly dies, and the boys are then left to their own devices. With no way of contacting either their parents or civilization in general.
In the beginning they cooperate in trying to catch food, building shelter and trying to keep warm at night.Soon however things get out of hand as they realize that no one is coming to get them. The group is divided into two fractions. One led by Ralph (Balthazar Getty),who tries to keep some semblance of order, cooperation and humanity. The other is led by Jack(Chris Furrh),who uses fear of the unknown( maybe a metaphor for religion)to get his followers-reverting to a path of primitive survivalism. Clashing over territory and stolen goods,Jacks group goes on to kill Piggy(Danuel Pipoly)from Ralph's group. Soon all except Ralph switches sides, and he is forced to flee for his life...
Lord of The Flies is an adaptation of the book by the same name, by William Golding.I've never read the book, but this movie certainly made a strong impression on me.The acting was great, especially from the boys in the lead roles. As for photography,it was effective, contrasting beautiful images of a lush tropical island, with the cruelty of the boys. The movie was a thoroughly harrowing experience.Especially because I was about 10 years old when I saw it.
