Review of Lord of the Flies (1963) by Kyle G — 24 Jul 2009
A truly harrowing, artistic production of William Golding's novel that was filmed against the grain of Hollywood's conventions at the time: Peter Brooks asked for only three things for the movie: a beach, enough money for the film and cameras, and some kids.
What he creates from this almost guerrilla approach to filmmaking is true descent into the deepest, darkest recesses of the human mind, a film that truly shows the stripping away of the ego's layers to reveal the slavering, monstrous id underlying them.
Brooks' images of the children are truly striking, beautiful, and haunting. While the children's acting can seem a little stagy at times,.
