Review of Looking for Eric (2009) by Andy K — 16 Oct 2009
A must-see for even non-football fans - this isn't really about Cantona who himself doesn't command much screen time at all. Looking for Eric is more to do with triumph over adversity, fighting through difficult times and finding that friends and family are the most important thing when you need help.
There's a strong Shameless influence, juxtaposed with Phoenix Nights-style comedy (even featuring Kenny Junior) and a few clips of Cantona with some of his best moments - this is a film everyone can relate to, even Scousers! I can't see many Americans clamouring to watch this, and many will struggle to cope with the strong Manc and French accents - but once you get used to them, there's a rewarding pay-off which rounds everything off nicely. Well-acted and directed, with a self-mocking Cantona to boot (no pun intended!).
