Review of Looking for Eric (2009) by Generoso F — 02 May 2010
The thought of an uplifting Ken Loach film boggles the mind. Loach the quintessential working class English director with such personal yet brutal films like "Raining Stones" and "Ae Fond Kiss" making a joyful film, well, not entirely.
Eric a father with two sons who don't respect him, a mindless job with the postal service and an estranged ex-wife who he still loves tries to end it all. He begins to get positive inner advice from a manifestation of his football hero, the great Eric Cantona, much in the same way that Bogart appeared to Woody Allen in "Play It Again Sam".
Cantona expresses a deep love for Cantona but also helps the titled Eric to realize that he must begin to trust the people around him to make his life better. Most of the film works though it's ending is a bit too much Capraesque charm mixed with soccer hooligan magic to truly get behind all the way.
Many kudos for Loach to even try making such a film and great performances all around make it worth a watch.
