Review of Long Weekend (1979) by Stephen C — 14 Oct 2012
The 1970s was a boom time for Australian Cinema and along with all the Picnic at Hanging rocks and the Chant of Jimmie Blacksmiths came grindhouse horror films and action movies.
The Long Weekend is quite possibly the best of that bunch and its eerie nature ranks it alongside better known films such as The Wicker Man.
Paul and Marcia are a bickering married couple who set off on a Camping trip during which Peter runs over a kangaroo and Marcia keeps hearing a bizzare noise.
When they seemingly drive straight on the keep returning to the same are as before and as the camping trip unfolds things get odder and odder as a seemingly dead Sea cow keeps moving up the beach even after Peter has killed it and they are attcked by various animals for no apparent reason.
The film has an atmospehere all of its own and John Hargreaves and Briony Behtets are excellent as the couple who dont treat nature with respect and pay the price .
The last 20 minutes are suitably creepy and in my view this is one of the best thrillers of the 1970s .
