Review of Lonesome Jim (2005) by Brett P — 17 Sep 2007
While many will find it depressing, I think it is because it is a story so blatantly honest to life. People fail. Nobody wants to hear it, but it's true. Persistent failure is depressing, and as Jim tries to escape such depression through apathy, he lives in a world of stagnation and apathy.
The film shows us the process of escaping this, and even if it isn't wholly realized, there is hope. Casey Affleck is a despicable antihero, but somehow, we sympathize. A number of fantastic laugh out loud moments ease the story along through its otherwise sullen journey, and they too make it worth it.
