Review of Lonesome Jim (2005) by Kristofer Å — 23 Jun 2008
Delightful deadpan comedy about a would-be writer trying to cope with professional failure and with dependency on a disastrously dysfunctional family. Casey Affleck's Jim is a depressed character, but I found the film very funny and oddly uplifting - partly because there is real warmth between these people and they generally get by somehow, and partly because it made my family and friends seem quite wonderful by comparison! Perhaps some of the comic situations are a little contrived, but the basic dynamics of the relationships seem all too true to life.
Low-key but a lot of fun.
