Review of Lonely Hearts (2006) by Eric T — 27 Jun 2010
There are two story lines in this movie, one with Jared Leto and Salma Hayek portraying a couple of con artists and murderers, the other with John Travolta who plays the detective on their trail and Laura Dern, his love interest.
The story line with the two outlaws preying on "Loney hearts" (women putting in personal ads in the "loney hearts" section in the newspaper) is really amazing, the acting is superb, the relationship between the two characters is really interesting and dark and yet you're uncontrollably drawn to it, it's romantic in a very morbid and psychotic way.
The other story line with the depressed detective using this case to deal with his own personal problems, not so much... I would have wanted to movie to focus more on the story of the con artists and their relationship and less on the officers. Also the narrative is by the other detective, John Travolta's partner, played by James Gandolfini, who you barely get to know in the movie, and that's just annoying.
I would watch this movie again for the sake of one scene between Jared Leto and Salma Hayek towards the end of the movie, and I won't give it away but you'll know it when you see it.
