Review of Lonely are the Brave (1962) by Rob P — 05 May 2018
Not sure how gina rowlands character fits in, except for making her point that men are only tolerable to make babies. But overall, the film kept me initerested without special effects while carrying the message that by 1962 the american west as portrayed by hollywood was gone. most of today's audiences could not appreciate the rugged individualist of that bygone era, one where you remove your gunstock and stick it down your boot in order to compensate for a bullet-shot ankle just to keep going. I think douglas loved this movie because that's who he believed he was - the son of immigrants, pioneers in their own way - and hoped he carried their individualist spirit.
I live in Tijeras canyon, east of albuquerque "the duke city", where the sandia mountains he crossed was filmed. They called it "scissors" canyon in the movie, which translated from spanish is "tijeras". other than interstate 40 going through that canyon, it and the sandia mountains are much the same today. there are still men on horseback herding cattle in the area, but there are just as many on quads doing the same job. such is life.
