Review of Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972) by Private U — 24 Jul 2008
One of the highest peaks of 70s chanbara exploitation films, and very fine adaptations of the original comics to boot. There is real joy to seeing the synthesis of super-violent grindhouse sword-fighting and classical bushido cinematic themes on display here.
Not quite as extreme or gory as its reputation may suggest, though, so stay away if that's what you're after. Check out SHOGUN ASSASSIN instead, where they edited together all the violent or sexy bits from the first three films into one movie for foreign distribution.
