I'm not much a fan of Mark Wahlberg movies. The shows he appears in tend to be ultraviolent, escapist trash. But Lone Survivor, the story of a SEAL team operation that went awry in 2005 in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan, transcends Wahlbergs past dramatic vehicles. The violence remains but the movie relates with a respectable amount of accuracy the story of Operation Red Wings, a failed mission to eliminate ambitious and ruthless Taliban leader Ahman Shah. An American Chinook helicopter was shot down with an RPG and a total of 19 American troops were killed.
The movie depicts quite a lot of misting blood and graphic depictions of gnarly injuries but it also contains some credible human interest as it describes and illustrates the rural Afghan concept of pashtunwali, and quite a lot of old-fashioned suspense. The story is well told. Once boots hit the ground in Kunar Province, the troubling tale unfolds quickly, with some well-executed cliffhangers along the way.
The movie is not for the faint of heart, but those who enjoy a good war story will appreciate Lone Survivor.
