Review of London Boulevard (2010) by Patrick K — 06 Apr 2011
Having seen some of the reviews and ratings for London Boulevard , I have to admit I was expecting a bit of a turkey but as it happens , this is a really good , stylish , London gangster movie.
Despite straying from his cockney accent a couple of times , Colin Farrell is extremely impressive as an ex con who is trying to go on the straight and narrow despite a gangland boss ( Ray Winstone ) doing his very best to recruit him.
Winstone is menacing as only he can be and it's mesmerising to watch sometimes when he's plying his trade. Scary is not an adequate enough word to describe him.
There's loads of violence and bad language but it could have done with a little bit of Guy Ritchie Humour.
There is a sub plot revolving around an actress played by Keira Knightly and it does become a slight distraction from the real nuts and bolts of the story but not enough to spoil it.
There are some good cameos from Eddie Marsan , Stephen Graham and Anna Friel and it just goes to show that critics are not always right.
Recommended.
