Review of Lolita (1962) by Adam Z — 25 Jun 2008
Kubrick rules the camera with his invaluable talent for playing with light, and the characters are cast to perfection: man, were they lucky to get James Mason cast in the Humbert role, and even luckier to find an actress like Sue Lyon brave enough to play Dolores Haze (I prefer to call her by that name- it's less creepier than the title label).
Sellers and Winters are both effective scene-stealers and Nabokov's script is near-great except for one problem that's been bothering me: what was the point of putting the final confrontation at the very beginning? Doesn't that leave us with an unsatisfactory anticlimax at the end? Otherwise a fine adaptation of an extraordinary novel.
