Review of Lolita (1962) by Matt J — 20 Nov 2008
OK...For me, this is quite a difficult film to rate, although its not what could be called a purely enjoyable film, it is very engaging. None of the characters are totally likeable - they are all flawed humans out to meet their needs in their various ways (be they healthy ways or not).
But the performances are all great...Mason in particular holds the film together with his own sanity slowly crumbling around him as the film progresses. Sellers is masterfully restrained...not overplaying his roles but is reigned in by Kubrick.
And Lyon adds to the question of just how innocent Lolita is in the procedings. As with films about paedophillia, like Hard Candy, Mysterious Skin, Little Children and The Woodsman, this is not neccessarily an easy watch, but it won't be forgotten quickly either.
