Review of Lolita (1962) by Ld P — 21 Aug 2009
Lolita (1962) A shocking early Kubrick!! I saw it at a film revival at Texas Tech University in the 1970s. It is a dark comedy about a 12 year old's obsession with an older man (and his obsession with a 12 year old) and then goes into a very dark disturbing and sinister movie about forbidden illegal love (in fact today called child molestation) In the mid 1970s I saw three or so very heavy profound shocking movies- one was satyricon Fellini second was Virginia Woolf Mike Nichols and the third was this movie which Kubrick himself wrote the screen play from Nabokov's book.
While this is a great movie from master film maker Kubrick Nabokov's Book Lolita is one of the greatest pieces of literature of the 20th century. Its beyond belief that a Russian could write such perfect English.
(he wrote in English not Russian) This is one of my all time favorite movies (and books) but contains touchy subject matter for most. The book is such a perversely underground creation that I am surprised Nabokov ever got it published.
The second half of the movie is some what slow. It is well advised for any and all interested to read the wiki entries for LOLITA Kubrick and Nabokov. These articles contain some great information. I have seen all of Kubrick's movies except for his shorts.
This is certainly his greatest movie. It is a a "heavily" censored version of the book "Lolita" but it is a masterpiece. five stars.
