Review of Lolita (1962) by Andrew C — 24 Oct 2009
Funny b/c it's true.
The best part's the setting-up-the-cot skit. Second's when Lolita does an impression of her mum that sounds like Donald Duck. Third best's the faces she makes.
Wasn't so funny when she fed him an egg. What type-a kinky S&M shit's that?
What a desperate plan: to suffer the bitchy past-her-prime mother in hopes of eventually winning the nubile daughter. Why not just visit her at camp or wait 'til she's older (after years of pining)?
The scene that best shows the problems with such a relationship is the conversation they have while he's painting her nails. But the basic relationship problems (him buying her whatever she wants but she takes it for granted and she pursuing other guys) are shared by older couples.
I could see girls having a thing for an older French professor but her 1 true love being the shiftiest guy in the production broke believability. The guy makes your skin crawl. Someone else shoulda been cast if he's supposed to turn women on.
I liked the earlier portion of this movie much more than the latter. An older widower going for her lodger and being bitchy b/c he prefers his daughter was believable. SPOILER after she dies and the obstacle to their relationship becomes her secret director-lover who stalks them across the country the movie's not as good.
