Review of Lolita (1962) by Ivan D — 14 Dec 2009
With its heavily controversial subject matter, it is breath-taking to think that Stanley Kubrick has able to made "Lolita" without crossing the lines. Along with the bizarre but beautiful plot, the performances were the highlights, especially those of Peter Sellers, who is like doing a dress rehearsal for "Dr.
Strangelove", and James Mason, who has shown the desperation and paranoia of a man obsessed perfectly. The only remote thing I did not admire about this early Kubrick film, is it seems like his artful touches is at lost here, without the particular trademark imageries that made him famous among cinephiles.
But still, "Lolita" is still solid filmmaking, with a little touch of dark comedy and gripping emotional tragedy.
