Review of Lolita (1962) by Ers . — 10 Aug 2010
I love Kubrick I've seen all his films except Eyes Wide Shut which I hope to soon but this movie vastly disapointed me It had a pretty average Humbert and took the easy way out addressing nearly all the issues of the book, adding age to the titular Lolita (in the film she's 15 while the novel has her at a mere 12) and really I'm guessing due to censorship just vaguely hinting at what's occurring between Humbert and Lolita to the point people not familiar with the novel may wonder what the hell's going on and why the Police are even after them? I gave it a 60 though because it did its best for the time and because of Peter Sellers.
It's impossible for him to do any wrong in mine eyes and this is one of my favorite performances as he glides in and out of the film like a chameleon. Plus the opening scene is incredible pure Kubrick, mixing dark themes and events with a bizarre sense of goofiness and an ethereal dream state brought on moreso by the Pink Floyd's The Wallish fade out right at the point it began.
Roman Ping...Roman Pong. Indeed sir! Luckily Sellers and Kubrick exhibited their genius far better the next go round.
