Review of Lolita (1962) by Lee Anne W — 27 Jan 2011
Watching this again after many years, I still experience many of the same feelings as originally: my heart breaks for braying, pathetic Shelley Winters; James Mason is wonderful in his pervy, controlling frustration; Peter Sellers is ridiculous and too much and completely brilliant and sexy. Is is a hair too long? Maybe. Does it deviate too much from the book? Probably, but it's been even longer since I've read it than I've seen this movie. Are the double entendres too heavy-handed at times? Yes, but...
The crisp and lush cinematography, and the opening scene with Humbert and Quilty, the perfect score. Brilliant. All of it.
