Review of Lolita (1962) by Thomas V — 30 Jan 2012
This black and white adaptation of Nabokov's masterpiece is quite a success and Stanley Kubrick can be acclaimed not only for having taken on the controversial project, but also for having mastered it.
James Mason is very much the picture you would get from the book, and he conveys with an unsettling easiness the perverse yet lovable, truthful and passionated Humbert Humbert. Sue Lyon's performance is also in perfect adequacy with Nabokov's creation and for a 16-yo actress at the time, it is admirable to portray Lolita Haze with such accuracy.
Every element is in its place and the combination of talents, without forgetting Peter Sellers, is providing the audience with one of the most loyal and truthful adaption of an epic book.
