Review of Lock Up (1989) by Ross M — 28 Mar 2009
Wow. To be quite honest, my expectaions wern't high for this. Most TV guide's I had read had only given this at least an average rating. Still, it seemed like a different kind of prison film, and it was. And a pretty damn good one too.
What I liekd about this was that it was more drama than anything, not what I was expecting from a Stallone film, and it actually does him wonders. It shows he really can act and deserves more credit than given.
There are some touching scenes with him and his fellow prisons in this that are pretty memorable and not overly done. Also, the ending really allows his acting abillity to come through too.
A young Tom Sizemore is also standout and really brings the film up. He tries his best all the way through and is very believable and his character realistic.
However, there are some complaints. For instance, there are some scenes that seem to go nowhere, such as a cafeteria stabbing and an overlong prisoners American Football scene, with the only use of it being that it highlights some themes of friendship which could have been covered in a shorter time, instead of drawing the match out for so long that even some good tackles get a bit tedious.
However, for all the disdain this film gets, none of it seems so deserved and is actually rather good.
