Review of Live by Night (2016) by David S — 15 Jan 2017
Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, Affleck directs and stars as a bootlegger that crosses his mafia boss by falling for one of his girls. He's forced to flee Boston and goes to work smuggling rum for a competing mobster down in Florida.
Then the story kind of takes a meandering stroll towards the inevitable confrontation that we all know must be coming at the end. The action scenes, though few and far between, are good but it's not enough of a shoot' em up to recommend on that basis alone and the love story is also not particularly engrossing leaving a flat feeling that is never really resolved.
I enjoyed the book which was actually a sequel to 'The Given Day' which I thought was a much more interesting story.
